Retail, Is it the Key to Your Survival During the Pandemic?


There’s never been a time that’s more critical than right now for Hair Stylists to put another solid stream of income in place by upping their Retail game. Many of us are still playing catch up from the last ‘shutdown’ and the Coronavirus numbers continue to rise nationwide. With the looming possibility of another shutdown, are you prepared? Retailing could be just the answer to ensure your income can sustain you whether you’re behind the chair, or not.


Last week we kicked off the Beauty SuperStars Talk monthly topic of ‘Winning the Retail Game’ with the President of Essations Hair Care Products, Stephanie Luster. She shared some amazing tips to help us take some of the fear out of retailing and begin to fill our bank accounts, using the clients we already have, and she showed us how to increase our ‘sphere of influence’ to gain even more sales. If fear of rejection is at the top of your list, you MUST watch her full interview. She does a masterful job of dismantling, basically taking all of the power out of what rejection is and what it feels like when we experience it, so we can just kick it out of the way instead of allowing it to paralyze us.


A few of the tips Stephanie shared on how to increase your salon’s retail sales:

  1. Instead of only thinking of how you can service the client while she’s in your chair, think of servicing the whole client - what does she need to do or use when she’s not in your chair? What about the other members of her household that you don’t service - her children, parents, spouse - what do they need for their hair and beauty needs? Make those recommendations as it will simplify your client’s next shopping trip!

  2. Realize that no one else has your knowledge, your expertise and your creativity. When you share information with your client, don’t feel intimidated or that your clients will leave you. Sharing that knowledge gains trust. People buy more from people they know like and trust. Sharing makes them want to come to you more, rather than less.

  3. Once you’ve used a product, told them why you used it (what it will do for them), sit it in front of them. They will want to use, what they see you use. Be sure to keep the rest of your station uncluttered.
