2 Black Women Won an Oscar for Hair and Make-up! Are We Diverse Yet?

I got there just in time and I sat on the edge of my seat, hoping I could hit the record button without shaking my phone! "And the Oscar goes to..." was announced in the category of Best Hair and Makeup in a Motion Picture - and they WON!!!

In 2021, for the first time in the history of the Academy Awards a Black woman was nominated for Best Hair and Make-up in a Motion Picture. Only there were two Black women nominated (on the same team), and they both won! Beauty SuperStars is sending out a great big CONGRATULATIONS to Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson, for their groundbreaking win! We still have so far to go. During the month of May, Beauty Industry Leader, Miki Wright, will interview seven Beauty Professionals to answer the question, “Is the Beauty Industry more inclusive and diverse than it was a year ago?”

May will mark one year since George Floyd’s tragic murder, and the racial turbulence that followed. Segregation in the Beauty Industry was exposed during that time and industry and Brand leaders vowed to make the Industry more inclusive, diverse and equitable for Black Beauty Professionals and other people of color. The main talks will air at 7pm ET on Tuesdays on https://YouTube.com/mikiwright with three (3) additional interviews on Thursday, May 6th, Thursday, May 13th and a 'pop up' interview on Wednesday, May 19th. Sign up for a reminder on https://beautysuperstars.com

What are you seeing and hearing in your salons, on your Editorial shoots, on online platforms? Does it look and feel more diverse? And from the top down - are you seeing more Black Board members, Photographers, Editors and decision makers? When you go to the store is there still an ‘Ethnic’ section? These conversations are necessary and promise to be raw, honest, and surely at times, emotional. Please tag a friend or create a Watch Party to join us.

Miki's guests include:

  • NAHA Winner and Minneapolist resident, Faatemah Ampey @faatemahinc on 5/4;

  • Author of The Hair, Makeup & Fashion Styling Career Guide and Freelancer Coach, Crystal Wright @crystalwrightlive on 5/6;
